Area Fan Claims to Fully Understand the NASCAR Playoff Format
Local man says he can explain the entire playoff system. Narrator: he could not.
A Mooresville, North Carolina man made national headlines this week after claiming — in front of witnesses — that he fully understands the NASCAR Cup Series playoff format.
The Bold Claim
Todd Renshaw, 43, reportedly made the statement at a neighborhood cookout while holding a Busch Light and standing next to a smoker.
"It's simple," Todd began, before proceeding to deliver an explanation that lasted 14 minutes and contradicted itself at least three times.
What He Said
According to multiple witnesses, Todd's explanation included the following claims:
- "There are 16 drivers, then 12, then 8, then 4. Or maybe 10 at some point."
- "Stage wins give you playoff points, which carry over, unless they don't."
- "If you win a race during the playoffs, you're automatically in the next round. Unless it's the last race. Then it's different."
- "The Championship 4 is basically the Final Four but with cars and more controversy."
Expert Verification
We ran Todd's explanation past a NASCAR official, who stared at a wall for thirty seconds before saying, "Close enough, honestly."
Todd's Response
When informed that several details of his explanation were incorrect, Todd doubled down.
"Look, I've been watching NASCAR since I was 12. I know what I'm talking about. The format is totally logical and anyone who says otherwise just isn't paying attention."
He then asked what the current points standings were and couldn't name the series leader.
